About 1911 Restaurant

Enjoy a Taste of History with a Modern Twist at 1911 Restaurant

Tucked away on a quiet bluff overlooking Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan, 1911 Restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience with a unique taste of history. Located in the Terrace Inn, the restaurant and adjoining hotel have been operating almost continually since their doors first opened in 1911.

Our Distinctive Location

1911 Restaurant is a hidden gem in the Bayview community. Our dining room welcomes guests to step back in time in elegant surroundings—think hardwood floors, antique chandeliers, a fireplace, and romantic décor. The Terrace offers an outdoor dining experience complete with breathtaking bay views and gentle breezes rustling through the trees. In both settings you can enjoy an extensive dinner menu featuring local, seasonal ingredients prepared by Chef Andy Carlson, or savor our happy hour as you sip on a huge selection of cocktails, beer, and wine paired with tasty snacks and appetizers.

Our Haunting History

No historic destination would be complete without a few ghost stories, and 1911 Restaurant and the Terrace Inn are no exception. The inn was commissioned by William J. DeVol, a banker from Lebanon, Indiana. He had the inn built for his wife, Josephine, to manage. During its construction between 1910 and 1911, it’s said that two workers were struck with a beam and fatally wounded. Their spirits have lived on, residing in the hotel. Many guests and members of the staff have reported strange sightings and signs of paranormal activity—some have heard footsteps, some have seen a man’s shadows moving through the hallways, and some have even heard the sounds of a party, even when the hotel was vacant.

Our Menu

You might come for the ghost stories, but you’ll want to stay for the food. 1911 Restaurant is open to the public and features an evolving seasonal menu showcasing local ingredients. However, one item that’s always on the menu is our hardwood-planked whitefish, which is caught fresh from Lake Michigan. We source from local farms, wineries, markets, and fish mongers to bring the freshest ingredients to your table. Chef Andy and our kitchen staff prepare everything from scratch with just one notable exception—our pies and breads come from the Dutch Oven Bakery in Alanson.

For dinner, you can choose from our delectable selection of entrees or let Chef Andy take you on a culinary journey with our three-course Prix Fixe menu. Our kitchen is accommodating of any special dietary needs, including vegetarian and gluten-free. On the lighter side, you might enjoy our appetizers, soups, and salads—all pair perfectly with our extensive selection of cocktails, locally brewed beers, and globally sourced wines.
